Overnight on Schunemunk
Garym
I did a short hike to the Megaliths yesterday ( highly reccommended), and I was wondering if overnight backpacking is allowed?  I did some searching and I know there are no open fires and no camping on the Highlands trail that runs thru that area.  That's all the info I could find.  If anyone has an answer it would be appreciated. Thanks

Schunemunk Mtn. S. P. - HT/Jessup Trail Closed @ 7 Springs Rd On
On February 27th, 2012 Larry Wheelock says: This is an update on the closing of the Highlands/Jessup Trail at Seven Springs Road. The Orange County Park renovations north of the road are NOT complete and the trail is closed where it approaches the construction area from the north and from the road. People are being ticketed for entering on the land. The County assures us that work will be complete "sometime" this spring. We'll be sure to alert people as soon as this happens.

Hil-Mar Lodge to Earl Reservoir

Hiked Hil-Mar Lodge to Long Path to Barton Swamp Trail to Western Ridge to Long Path to Jessup Trail to Earl Reservoir: 4 hours. Very enjoyable, you need boots, some tress with trail markers are on the ground, the north side of the eastern ridge is very icy but there were no problems on the Long Path itself.

Earl Reservoir

I have been hiking up to the Jessup Trail on the unamed red trail from Earl Reservoir this week.  I have enjoyed it but the area around the Mountain Lodge cell phone towers is littered with garbage from recent visitors.  I took the Western Ridge Trail yesterday, but had to turn back as an escarpment of bare rock was covered in a sheet of ice.

Schunemunk Mountain On December 10th, 2011 Michael K7 says:

is a soggy, muddy mess. Other than the ridges, the trails are overflowing in places, and wet everywhere else. The eastern part of the Western Ridge Trail (blue blazed) is submerged under at least 6 inches of water. Every water crossing i did today (with the exception of one) was difficult, and if it had not been for me bringing my overboots, my feet would have been soaked.

There is still snow on the ground in many spots, that will continue to melt, so i don't see this area drying out anytime soon. Lots of slippery, wet rocks, tough descents. Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone planning on hiking there this weekend on what to expect.

Also, the Shortline bus that goes to SM is the same bus that stops at Woodbury Commons- not fun.

Hunting on Schunemunk Mountain
Larry Wheelock
Schunemunk Mountain is made up of a patchwork of lands owned or managed by private owners, land trusts and NY State Dept of Parks. Much of the private land has open hunting season in accordance with the southern region DEC regulations. This means that much of the State Parks managed land is surrounged by active hunters durring the season, although, currently there is no hunting on the State property. (Consideration is currently being given to opening deer hunting next year.) Advise, if you plan to hike in the Schunemunk Mountain S. P. wear blaze orange by all means.

Gonzaga Park on Schunemunk Mountain
Larry Wheelock
On contacting the Orange County Department of Parks on 10/06/2011 I was informed: "The park will be opened in Spring 2012.  The new athletic field is being permitted this fall on weekends, but the site is only open to accommodate these games at this time, while we finish other work this fall. Orange County Parks" We'll let you know as soon as we get word from them.
